The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved the first generic equivalent of a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women, a drug that is made by a company known as Premarin.
HRT is also the first FDA-approved HRT product to include an active ingredient that has been linked to a higher risk of menopause in women, researchers said in a news release.
The new drug will treat the symptoms of menopause, and it's the first FDA-approved HRT that does not contain hormones.
The drug is the second HRT approved by the FDA to include an active ingredient. The first was called Premarin, which is made by GlaxoSmithKline of New York City.
The drug is available as a generic version of Premarin, which is also made by the same company.
Premarin is available in strengths of 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg.
The company also made an application for a generic equivalent to Premarin on Dec. 7, 2015, to be sold by Novartis Consumer Healthcare in the United States.
“It's been the best experience of my life. I’ve had a lot of success with it,” said Karen Scholz, a health care provider with the Women's Health Institute.
In October, the company added a warning about the risk of birth defects.
The drug was approved by the FDA in October 2015 for a range of conditions including menopause, osteoporosis and women at risk for endometriosis. It is not currently in the same approval schedule as a hormone replacement therapy.
There are no reports of adverse events related to the use of the drug in the United States.
The company is committed to supporting women in their journey to become healthier, to have a better quality of life and to stay healthy, said Karen Scholz, the group's president of sales and marketing.
She said the company is also working with the Food and Drug Administration on other HRT products and the possibility of generic competitors. The company will also continue to market it to patients.
The drug is not currently in its first year of distribution, and it is not known when it will begin selling.
Premarin is approved for use by women who are not pregnant, but it has not been studied for safety in women.

It also helps in manageing moderate to severe dyspareunia (genital pain during sexual intercourse) that occurs due to menopause.
Who should not use PREMARIN VAGINAL?
PREMARIN VAGINAL is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Conjugated estrogens. It is also not suitable for use in patients having unusual vaginal bleeding, breast or uterine cancer, blood clot in legs (deep venous thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism), bleeding disorder or heart problems. PREMARIN VAGINAL should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.
How to use PREMARIN VAGINAL?
Apply PREMARIN VAGINAL as directed by your physician. It should be used only in and around the vagina or the genital area. PREMARIN VAGINAL comes in a tube along with an applicator. Use the applicator for applying the medicine. Gently squeeze the sufficient medicine from the tube into the applicator. Lie down on your back or in any comfortable position. Gently insert the applicator into the vagina and press the plunger downwards to release the medicine in the vagina. Remove the applicator from the vagina after application. If you want to apply PREMARIN VAGINAL to the external parts of vagina, take the required quantity of PREMARIN VAGINAL and apply it at the required sites of the genital area.
What are the side effects of PREMARIN VAGINAL?
The most common side effects of applying PREMARIN VAGINAL are stomach pain, back pain, breast pain or tenderness, headache, vaginal infection, or vaginal discharge.
